We have students from all years who have gained experience through their long-standing involvement and are keen to share this with others. You’ll almost always find a WOT member in WI214. We work on our projects here whenever we have time. We also try to meet up once a week to share our experiences.
The WOT meeting currently takes place every Wednesday from 12.45 pm to 1.45 pm in the MM lab, WI214.
To organise our work clearly, we have divided it into various projects. Every Web-O-Troniker can get involved in the projects of their choice, such as the Linux network in the IT lab, projects relating to hardware and network technology, and multimedia such as photography, video recording and video editing.
Long-term active involvement with WOT can be recognised as fulfilment of the Studium Generale requirement. Furthermore, active participation in WOT is recognised as a 0.3 admission quota bonus when applying for a Master’s programme in the Faculty of Engineering (ING). For various projects, it is also possible to be employed as a student assistant (Hiwi). The most important thing, however, is to try things out, take on responsibility and contribute your individual strengths to the team.
Beyond the projects, there are also shared cultural highlights: barbecues, hiking trips, Christmas parties, our WOT birthday in November and much more… The WOT has been in existence since 1 November 1996, so there are already plenty of ‘WOT alumni’.
If you’d like to get involved, why not pop round to the Wiener-Bau in room WI214!

Questions & Answers
How do I become a member?
It’s very simple: just get in touch with a Web-O-Troniker or one of the supervisors, or come along to a WOT meeting. You’ll be given a membership application form, on which we’ll ask for your login details, address and telephone number. Once you’ve filled it in and handed it in, you’ll be added to the membership list – and you’ll be part of the group in no time.
What do I need to join?
A positive attitude and a willingness to get actively involved. You should enjoy working on independent projects. You should be curious about new things. If you already have some knowledge of computers, networks and multimedia, that’s certainly an advantage – but it’s not a requirement.
Can I balance my studies with project work?
Yes. The Web-O-Troniks have the following basic rules:
- Your studies come first.
- Taking on projects is voluntary. Anyone who takes on a project should commit to it.
- Projects are concluded with appropriate documentation and a presentation.
What do I get out of being involved, and what does it cost me?
Above all, it takes a bit of time – but it’s time well spent. Each month, every WOT member pays €2 into the WOT fund, which is used primarily to help finance WOT events. But in return, you get a lot:
- project work in a real-world IT environment,
- supervised work on exciting technical topics,
- recognition from Studium Generale for active participation, 0.3 points towards the numerus clausus when applying for a Master’s degree,
- a certificate confirming your WOT involvement, if requested, and
- you’ll become part of the WOT network.
Can I leave the programme?
Yes. You simply inform the supervisors that you are no longer interested in continuing your membership.

- A WOT member suggests something and enough people get involved.
- Some events are traditional: the WOT anniversary and the Christmas party.
Objectives of the WOT
The ‘Web-O-Troniker’ student working group at the Faculty of Engineering
Objective since 1. November 1996
- Our objective is to acquire and apply expertise in the field of information technology. Covering everything from hardware (systems, network structures) through to software (operating systems, programming languages, application programmes) and Internet technology, we address topics relating to the specialist fields of automation, electrical engineering and telecommunications. The in-depth acquisition of knowledge by individual Web-O-Tronics members on specific aspects – which then creates synergy effects through specialist presentations within the group – forms the basis for the realisation of projects. These projects serve as a testing ground for engineering methodologies, as the Web-O-Tronics students take full responsibility for the projects themselves – from planning and project management right through to final implementation.
- A key focus of the work is supporting and facilitating the faculty’s technical and technological development. New technologies, for example in the field of multimedia, are supported by the WOT projects and thus quickly put to effective use.
- Project-based collaboration with partners outside the university is an integral part of our objectives.
