Freshers’ Coaches
Become a first-year coach and help our first-year students settle into university life!
First-year student coaches are students in higher semesters (at least the third semester) who support first-year students throughout their first semester and, as mentors, pass on their knowledge and experience. In this way, first-year students benefit from the experience and knowledge of the Ersti-Coaches, whilst the Ersti-Coaches, in turn, gain personal and professional experience and find new inspiration.
How do you become a first-year coach?
Anyone who’d like to meet new people and help first-year students get off to a good start in university life is welcome to apply to become a first-year coach.
The requirements
You must be enrolled in at least your third semester of a degree programme at the Faculty of Engineering, be able to work independently, guide others, adopt a solution- and resource-oriented approach, and be open to different perspectives.

The training
Freshers’ coaches are prepared for their role in terms of content, methodology and teaching techniques during a two-day training course. Throughout the semester, they will, of course, be supported by myself and Urte Graba (Peer Centre). The two-day training programme covers topics such as mentoring, support, role expectations, responsibilities and the limits of the role, as well as exploring group processes, guided ice-breaking, team building and various communication models, familiarising participants with the induction week schedule, and much more. We organise regular meetings with the coaches to facilitate cross-faculty exchange, as well as a reflective session to round off the programme.
Your reward
Depending on your degree programme, this role is rewarded with ECTS credits as part of the Studium Generale module.
