School Meets Science
HTWK Leipzig collaborates with numerous schools in and around Leipzig. This not only enables pupils to gain a practical understanding of the wide range of degree programmes on offer, but also provides them with first-hand insights into the exciting field of applied sciences.
The range of activities on offer at the Faculty of Engineering extends from workshops on electrical and information technology, energy and environmental engineering, and mechanical engineering, right through to supervision of KoL and BeLL projects. Pupils can also complete their compulsory work placement with us or test their knowledge in the ExperiWatt pupil competition.
You can find an overview of the Faculty of Engineering’s current programmes on this page.
Further information on the full range of programmes offered by HTWK Leipzig can be found on the ‘Schule trifft Hochschule’ website.
Python Workshops
Field trip opportunities for schools
We offer school classes from Leipzig and the surrounding area the opportunity to go on a field trip to the Faculty of Engineering at HTWK Leipzig and, for example, to learn the basics of programming in a fun way at a Python workshop, or to build on the Python skills they have already learnt.
Depending on prior knowledge and year group, the Python workshops can last between one and three hours. If there is interest in a project week, other workshops from our ‘Renewable Skills’ project can be included alongside the various Python workshops.
Ideally, a whole day should be set aside for the excursion.
Python workshop with Minecraft Education
Pupils learn Python in a playful way within the Minecraft Education world. Depending on their prior knowledge, the most suitable Python course can be selected individually on the day. The courses are completed independently at the pupils’ own pace. Depending on the workshop and the time allocated, one to two Python courses can be covered. For the multiplayer game Seymour Island – recommended from Year 9 onwards – at least three hours of workshop time should be allowed. For most Python courses, a knowledge of English is required to be able to complete the courses independently. The tutor is always on hand to help with any questions or problems.
Subject classification:
Computer Science, from Year 9
(science stream), from Year 5
Maximum number of participants: 28 people (excluding teachers)
Duration: approx. 1–4 hours; longer sessions are also possible
Field trip as part of career and university guidance
As part of career and university guidance, the excursion can also be combined, from Year 8 onwards, with a presentation of degree programmes and interesting laboratory tours to learn more about engineering degrees and the career prospects for engineers.
At the Faculty of Engineering, the accredited degree programmes in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Energy, Building and Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering can be studied at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Participants will find out what these terms actually mean during a programme presentation.
Duration of the programme presentation: approx. 30 minutes, including a 15-minute Q&A session
In addition, we can offer pupils an insight into various laboratories where our students undertake their practical placements and where our researchers carry out their work. Depending on the availability of the relevant staff, we can include laboratory tours covering agri-photovoltaics, robotics, the bike lab, the wastewater and sanitation tower, and digital reconstruction as part of the excursion.
Duration: 15 to 20 minutes per tour (group: half a class)

Research
Research with school pupils
Since 2016, school pupils in Leipzig have been working alongside scientists from the Faculty of Engineering and other partner organisations to research and discover how technical applications from the field of industrial measurement technology can be used to implement sustainable strategies that protect the environment and conserve resources.
One of the aims of the projects is to provide school pupils with science-based answers to everyday questions relating to sustainability.
Current projects & workshops
Renewable Skills Project
From the 2025/2026 academic year onwards, we will be offering various workshops, field trips and interactive talks developed as part of the Renewable Skills project.
Registrations are now open.
You can find all workshops and activities here: Renewable Skills Workshops
FaGULab Project
As part of the FaGULab educational project, pupils collect environmental data on the green roofs of bus stops in Leipzig and are developing a real-world laboratory using citizen science approaches.
The first phase of the project begins in August 2025.

Competition
ExperiWatt School Competition
In recent years, pupils have been able to gain an insight into the field of electrical engineering at the Faculty of Engineering through the science competition experiNat (experiNat 2019 review).
Since 2020, the competition has continued under the new name ExperiWatt, organised and run by the four partner organisations: VDI GaraGe gemeinnützige GmbH, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH – UFZ, INSPIRATA e.V. and HTWK Leipzig/Faculty of Engineering.
ExperiWatt always takes place in the spring and is aimed at Year 9 pupils from secondary schools and grammar schools in Leipzig and the surrounding area. The competition not only complements the curriculum but also encourages independent work and a personal enthusiasm for experimentation. ExperiWatt focuses on the spirit of inquiry and engaging with key STEM topics.
