On 3 January 2025, our highly esteemed colleague Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Günter Stein passed away
Prof. Günter Stein began his academic career at the Technical University of Dresden, where he studied electrical engineering, specialising in control engineering. After graduating with a degree in engineering in 1962, he worked for several years as a development engineer in industry before moving to the former Engineering School for Automation Technology in Leipzig, which merged with Leipzig University of Applied Sciences in 1977. Whilst working as a lecturer, he pursued his scientific qualifications and in 1975 obtained his doctorate in engineering with a thesis on multivariable control systems at the Technical University of Ilmenau. In 1984, he habilitated at the Technical University of Leipzig with a thesis on sliding mode controls. In 1982, Prof Stein was appointed university lecturer for control engineering at the Technical University of Leipzig.
In addition to his research work, which since the late 1980s has dealt with problems of non-linear control, digital simulation and computer-aided learning, Prof. Stein has been actively involved in various standardisation committees since the 1970s, most recently in the DKE German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies in DIN and VDE.
When the HTWK Leipzig was founded in 1992, Prof Stein was appointed to the Chair of Control Engineering in the then Department of Electrical Engineering. In this position and as a member of various academic committees, he was committed to the restructuring of the department. As Dean from 1996 to 2001, he initiated the introduction of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and Industrial Engineering/Electrical Engineering. During his time as Dean, he oversaw the complete refurbishment of the Wiener Building, the faculty's building steeped in tradition. On his initiative, the faculty built on the tradition of technical education in Leipzig associated with this building. One highlight was the 125th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Municipal Trade School in 2000, for which he was responsible.
Prof Günter Stein was a highly valued colleague and superior due to his friendly and level-headed manner.
We will keep Günter Stein in honourable memory.
