VDE-Bezirksverein Leipzig/Halle e.V. awards prize for outstanding theses in the field of electrical engineering in 2022
On 27 June 2023, the VDE District Association Leipzig/Halle e.V. (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies) awarded its prize for outstanding final theses from 2022 in the field of electrical engineering at its annual general meeting.
The term electrical engineering encompasses all techniques and processes associated with electricity, from classic power engineering to electronics and information and communication technology.
The award ceremony
This year, two Bachelor's and two Master's theses were awarded, including the Master's thesis by HTWK graduate Simon Rottig on the topic of "Development of a simulation tool to investigate the behaviour of perovskite-based photovoltaic systems". The thesis was supervised by Prof Mathias Rudolph (Faculty ING, HTWK Leipzig), Julian Hofbauer (Faculty ING, HTWK Leipzig) and Dr Ulf Brandt (bau msr GmbH).
After a short presentation of their theses, Paul Zembrod, Chairman of the VDE Association Board, presented the graduates with their certificates and prize money.
The event took place on the grounds of the Electrotechnical Collection in Markkleeberg, bringing together the past, present and future of electrical engineering at the VDE district association.
The theses
Simon Rottig's award-winning master's thesis was written as part of the joint research project "SunProcess" by HTWK Leipzig & bau msr GmbH. As part of the work, the prototype of a simulation software based on MATLAB was created, with which the simulation of various perovskite tandem solar cells as part of entire PV systems is possible. This is done depending on various boundary conditions, such as meteorological data from different locations, optoelectronic properties of different cell materials and interconnection of the cells and modules. In addition, metrological investigations of real perovskite solar cells were carried out and used to validate the simulation software.
The other honoured theses and the prizewinners of recent years are listed on the VDE Leipzig/Halle website(https://www.vde-leipzig-halle.de/de/ueber-uns/preise-ehrungen).
VDE Leipzig/Halle District Association
The "Elektrotechnische Verein Leipzig" was founded in 1891, two years before the VDE united the regional groups under one roof. On 18 July 1990, after a long interruption, the VDE was continued in the Leipzig/Halle district association.
Its members include engineers, technicians and students, as well as companies from the electrical engineering and information technology sectors and related industries. The regional programme of events is correspondingly broad, ranging from lectures and excursions to working groups and special services. This provides a technical and scientific platform for the interdisciplinary exchange of experience and knowledge transfer. The tasks of the association include
- the maintenance and promotion of technical sciences and their applications
- the promotion of accident prevention in the interest of the safety of the general public, in particular users of electronic products, to protect against risks to life and limb, property, the environment and other assets
- raising the members' sense of responsibility towards the general public in the further development and application of technical sciences
- informing the public about the importance and tasks of electrical engineering, electronics and information technology
