Winning videos now online: creative short films, real film or a mixture of stop-motion Lego movie
In the school competition ExperiWatt pupils actually conduct experiments and research on selected STEM topics with one of the competition's four cooperation partners. However, the organisers opted for a digital alternative so that the competition did not have to be cancelled in 2021 due to the pandemic-related contact restrictions: The "EffektWerkstatt 2021" video challenge.
"Organising ExperiWatt as a video competition was a new experience for all of us. We are delighted that the competition could take place again this year and had a lot of fun mastering the new challenges involved," says Jan Dossin from the Faculty of Engineering, who has been in charge of the competition at HTWK since 2012.
Until the end of March 2021, pupils in year 9 were able to submit their own chain reaction videos. The challenge of the video challenge was to create STEM chain reaction videos based on a AA battery. However, it didn't matter whether the battery's energy was utilised in electrical (e.g. circuit), potential (e.g. falling onto a seesaw) or kinetic (e.g. battery rolling onto something) form.
The result was creative short films between two and three minutes long that present chain reactions in a wide range of variations, sometimes as a real film or as a mixture of stop-motion Lego film. The ExperiWatt team selected four winning videos as particularly successful and will soon be presenting the winners with their prizes.
The four winning videos of the "EffektWerkstatt 2021" can be viewed on the ExperiWatt website (links go to YouTube):

Outlook: ExperiWatt 2022?
However, the school competition thrives above all on the fact that pupils can experiment and conduct research live on site with the module partners. This allows them to get to know various Leipzig knowledge institutions up close. "That's why we'll be discussing what ExperiWatt 2022 could look like over the next few months," says Jan Dossin.
