Pupils from the Thonberg School's energy team did more than just light up the lights during the HTWK visit.
On 16 December 2024, pupils at Thonberg School were able to experience the bicycle generator from Jan Dossin, laboratory engineer in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.
Using the converted fitness bike, the participants were able to convert their kinetic energy into electrical energy, with a live display showing the power output achieved. How long do you have to pedal on the bicycle generator before the light bulbs light up? And can you also use it to boil water?
The pupils had a lot of fun trying to answer these questions. It turned out that it takes a lot more muscle power to heat water than to light up light bulbs. The sweat-inducing experiment required a lot of energy from all participants for a cup of tea.
Everyone sweated and realised that if you want to be environmentally conscious, you should only heat as much water as you need in the kettle and use hot water sparingly.
