HTWK Leipzig breaks new ground towards electric flying: Kick-off meeting for the European joint project Printcap took place on 11 July 2022 in Palaiseau near Paris at the headquarters of consortium leader Thales R&T.
In aviation, there are still no market-ready solutions forCO2-free mobility systems, meaning that this industry has regularly missed its climate targets in the past. One of the main reasons for the lack of a breakthrough for electrically powered aircraft is that the energy required for take-off and landing can currently only be provided by extremely heavy batteries. There is therefore a need to develop both powerful and lightweight energy storage solutions for aviation. From June 2022, Prof Robert Böhm from the Faculty of Engineering at HTWK Leipzig will be working on this topic together with three other partners in the European joint project "Next Generation of 3D Printed Structural Supercapacitors" (Printcap).
"In the Printcap project, we are developing so-called structural supercapacitors together with renowned partners. These multifunctional composite materials are highly resilient and can also provide large amounts of energy in a short time. In contrast to existing concepts, we will focus on additive manufacturing to produce the structures, a technology in which we can arrange the supercaps close to the final contour in the component, resulting in geometrically optimised structures with an optimum energy storage function," says Prof. Robert Böhm, explaining the project.
In the M-Era.net project, the HTWK is working together with the TU Dresden and the French partners Thales R&T and Nawa Technologies. The HTWK team is primarily dedicated to the simulation-based design and optimisation of the structure-supporting supercapacitors. "We will provide the team with a virtual development environment that can be used to calculate the mechanical properties and energy storage capacity of the materials. On the other hand, we will also include issues of recyclability, safety, fire protection and dismantlability in the design," explain M.Eng. Willi Zschiebsch and M.Sc. Davood Peyrow Hedayati, who are working on the project at the HTWK.
