Hannes Hartwig was awarded first prize for his master's thesis on the development of a wireless sensor application

The Leipzig District Association of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) awards an annual prize to young researchers to recognise outstanding achievements in research and development in the field of engineering. On 10 September 2021, Master's student Hannes Hartwig from the Faculty of Engineering was awarded the 1st prize of the VDI Bezirksverein Leipzig e.V. for his thesis on the development of a wireless sensor application for use in electrically conductive, highly damping media.
Hannes Hartwig completed his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, specialising in Electronic Circuit Technology and Signal Processing. For his master's thesis, he was given the task of developing a wireless sensor application for use in electrically conductive, highly attenuating media. In addition to theoretical preliminary considerations on the selection of suitable transmission frequencies and the antenna design, this also included the selection of a low-power microcontroller, the design and implementation of a time and transmission protocol to ensure transmission reliability and the design of a circuit board, including the performance of corresponding functional tests.

Hartwig's research work was supervised by Prof Gerold Bausch (Chair of Embedded Systems and Signal Processing, Faculty of Engineering, HTWK Leipzig). In his assessment of the work, Prof. Bausch emphasised that Hannes Hartwig had succeeded extraordinarily well in identifying key problems from a complex and extensive topic, which included the various areas of radio technology, hardware and software development, and in developing a solution that goes far beyond the required scope.
"It is also particularly noteworthy that Mr Hartwig's investigations have led to new findings in the field of geotechnics, which are now being continued in further research work," praised Prof Gerold Bausch.
Other prize winners
M. Sc. Christian Hofmann was awarded 2nd prize for his Master's thesis "Development of a magnetic inductive measuring system for testing steel cables". He studied electrical engineering and information technology at the HTWK and was supervised by Prof. Dr Andreas Hebestreit and Prof. Dr Frank Illing.
The 3rd prize (not in the picture due to absence) was awarded to Lukas Papenfuß for his bachelor's thesis on "Integration of a camera inspection in series production for quality assurance of conformity-relevant vehicle labels", which he wrote at HAWK Göttingen and Porsche Leipzig GmbH.
The special prize for student work went to high school student Oliver Richter for his thesis entitled "Innovative, efficient and environmentally friendly: The Flettner Rotor - technology of the future?". He has already won a prize from the VDI Bezirksverein Leipzig e.V. at Jugend forscht 2019 (Max-Klinger-Schule, Gymnasium der Stadt Leipzig).
The sponsorship award of the VDI Bezirksverein Leipzig e.V.
Young researchers in the fields of engineering can apply for the VDI Bezirksverein Leipzig e.V. sponsorship award with their student research project, dissertation or thesis. In addition to innovative findings, the research work should also take feasibility and cost-effectiveness into account, i.e. develop applicable solutions. Both individual theses and project group work can be submitted.
The research work will be assessed by a board of trustees with the participation of a jury. The board of trustees consists of selected representatives from business, industry and education who oversee the sponsorship award on behalf of the VDI Bezirksverein Leipzig e.V..
The sponsorship awards of the VDI Bezirksverein Leipzig e.V. are associated with the presentation of a certificate and financial recognition. The prize money is provided by sponsors from the business world.
