Philipp Sieber was honoured for his bachelor thesis on the heat treatment and corrosion resistance of razor steel
On 9 March 2023, Philipp Sieber received the Dörrenberg StudienAWARD with prize money of 1,000 euros for his bachelor's thesis "Heat treatment and properties of X65Cr13 razor steel", which he wrote at the Faculty of Engineering at HTWK Leipzig under the supervision of Prof. Dr.-Ing.
"In my thesis, we investigated how heat treatment affects the microstructure and properties of razor steel and looked into the question of why razor blades often corrode very quickly and how this can be avoided by optimising heat treatment," explains the mechanical engineering student.
After the submission, a technical evaluation and pre-selection for the final round took place at Dörrenberg Edelstahl GmbH in Engelskirchen near Cologne. There, the candidates previously selected by the jury were allowed to present their work in lectures.
The jury in 2023 included the two Managing Directors of Dörrenberg Edelstahl GmbH, Marc Breidenbach and Gerd Böhner, Prof Christoph Broeckmann from RWTH Aachen University, Prof Reinhold Schneider from the FH Upper Austria Campus Wels, Prof Werner Theisen from Ruhr University Bochum and Prof Christoph Escher, Head of Central Materials Technology at Dörrenberg Edelstahl GmbH.
The prize
The Dörrenberg StudienAWARD from Dörrenberg Edelstahl GmbH was presented to five selected students for the 15th time.
This competition, which is associated with prize money totalling 10,000 euros, is awarded to project or bachelor theses by students who have dealt with materials technology issues relating to steel, heat treatment, surface technology or process engineering as part of their academic studies.
The winner of this year's Dörrenberg StudienAWARD was Felix Radtke from RWTH Aachen University for his entry "Development of a heat treatment for an LPBF tool steel made from a powder mixture", Marius Weiser from the University of Bremen took second place and Robin Böhner from the Technical University of Rosenheim/Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH took third place. Stefanie Berghuber from the Montanuniversität Leoben was also delighted to receive prize money.
