As part of a two-week exchange programme, students from Kazakhstan visited the Faculty of Engineering on 30 March 2023 and completed internships in robotics and reverse engineering
As part of an international exchange programme between Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and Kazakh universities, Kazakh students from the Robotics, Automation and Engineering departments took a trip to the Faculty of Engineering at HTWK Leipzig on 30 March 2023.
The 15 students from Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications, Toraighyrov University and Satbayev University took the opportunity to take part in robotics and reverse engineering internships at the Faculty of Engineering.
The robotics internship gave them an insight into the basics of robotics for industrial robots. After a detailed briefing on safety and handling by Dipl.-Ing. Martin Neuburger, they were also allowed to control and test the KUKA robots straight away. One of the tasks was to have several robots work independently and networked on a task. This included manual operation of the various robots, programming (teaching) for an automatic work sequence and networking several robots with each other.
The second practical course by Dr Tobias Flath and Dr Dmytro Rassokhin was dedicated to "Reverse engineering - optical 3D scanning". Theoretical content on the entire reverse engineering process chain was taught here, with the focus on the sub-area of optical 3D scanning (GOM system). Dr Tobias Flath used a practical example to show the participants the path from the real to the scanned digital solid. The guests were actively involved during the scans and were able to understand the subsequent process for further processing the digitised components, quality control in comparison with the design data, direct 3D printing or the integration of the scans into complex CAD designs using exemplary project examples.
The entire exchange programme was conceived and organised by Dr Maryna Popova, a member of staff in the Department of Electrical, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. Anhalt University of Applied Sciences has been organising internships for students from universities in countries such as Ukraine and North Macedonia via various DAAD programmes since 2013. This year, the exchange programme took place for the first time with students from Kazakhstan. In addition to practical workshops, such exchange programmes also focus on social aspects.
Dr Maryna Popova explains: "We are convinced that not only the content of the subjects is important for students in the educational process, but also the opportunity to make contacts and feel at home in a foreign country far away from home. That's why we try to familiarise them with Germany and the local socio-cultural environment and show them what it would be like to study here."
Exchange programmes promote future cooperation, especially in view of the shortage of skilled workers and the necessary climate change. Berik, a student at Satbayev University, said during his visit to Leipzig: "Kazakhstan has made great progress in the field of renewable energies in recent years. There are already several large solar power plants and our sunny, wide open spaces are ideal for the expansion of photovoltaic systems."
The Faculty of Engineering would like to thank Dr Popova for her valuable cooperation and hopes that the Kazakh students were able to benefit from her practical insights.
