Until 31 March, pupils in year 9 can take part in the video challenge. The HTWK is also taking part again. It's worth taking part!
The "ExperiWatt" competition will be held this year as the video competition "EffektWerkstatt 2021" for pupils in year 9 (secondary school/grammar school) in the Leipzig region.
Normally, the students conduct experiments and research on selected STEM topics at one of the four cooperation partners of the competition, including HTWK Leipzig, but due to the corona-related contact restrictions, the organisers have opted for the video challenge format in 2021.
Jan Dossin from the Faculty of Engineering has been in charge of the competition at HTWK since 2012: "The student competition already has such a long tradition and is firmly established at many schools. That's why we realised straight away that we didn't want to simply skip it this year. We were extremely lucky last year: the first lockdown happened just two weeks after the 2020 round. The award ceremony was cancelled, but everything else could take place as normal. This year, we want to try a new format with the video challenge so that we don't lose contact with the schools. We are very excited to see what the response will be!"
The video challenge
The task: create a STEM chain reaction video
The conditions:
- Video length: min. 2 minutes - max. 4 minutes.
- The chain reaction should contain a variety of effects that are as creative as possible
- The start is the same for everyone and is predetermined: A Mignon/AA battery is the starting point. The energy of this battery can be utilised, whether in electrical (e.g. circuit), potential (e.g. falling onto a seesaw) or kinetic (e.g. battery rolling onto something) form.
- Introduction: At the beginning of the video, give a brief overview of the entire course and briefly introduce the team.
- The task can be completed alone, in small groups or, at most, as a class.
- Include the school name or logo in the video.
- The ExperiWatt logo should appear at least once during the film.
- It should be clearly recognisable that the video was made by the young people themselves
- Video format is optional: Whether live recording (without cut, with cut), whether stop motion, whether animation or as a Minecraft variant - anything is possible
The video must be submitted to the ExperiWatt team by 31 March 2021.
For this purpose, the contribution should be uploaded to YouTube in advance and the corresponding YouTube link sent by e-mail to info (at) experiwatt.de .
Do not forget: Include the team name, the names of the individual students and the name of the school.

Background: The competition - experiNat becomes ExperiWatt
As experiNat, the science competition was financed and organised by Leipziger Stadtwerke (now the L-Group) from 2006 to 2019. After the 13th edition in 2019, the L-Group said goodbye to the format in order to "focus on other measures" in future. The four module partners of the experiNat competition, VDI GaraGe gemeinnützige GmbH, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH - UFZ, INSPIRATA e.V. and HTWK Leipzig/Faculty of Engineering, decided to continue the now established and popular STEM competition with slightly different framework conditions.
Since 2020, the competition has been held under the new name ExperiWatt. ExperiWatt is also aimed at pupils in year 9 from secondary schools and grammar schools in Leipzig and the surrounding area. With ExperiWatt, VDI GaraGe, UFZ, INSPIRATA and HTWK Leipzig/Faculty ING offer a supplement to the curriculum and at the same time encourage independent work and individual experimentation. ExperiWatt focusses on the urge to research and the exploration of STEM topics relating to renewable energy and the energy of the future.
