Almost 100 mechanical engineering students visit HTWK Leipzig as part of their one-week excursion abroad.
On 7 November 2024, the Faculty of Engineering at HTWK Leipzig welcomed students and their supervisors from Avans Hogeschool in the Netherlands.
Just like HTWK Leipzig, Avans Hogeschool is a university of applied sciences. With campuses in Breda, Roosendaal, 's-Hertogenbosch and Tilburg in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant, the Avans Hogeschool has a total of 35,000 students enrolled.
Like the Faculty of Engineering at HTWK Leipzig, the university offers degree programmes in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and energy technology. All first-semester students on the mechanical engineering programme at the Avans Hogeschool have the opportunity to take part in a one-week excursion abroad. During this excursion, the students get to know a region's companies and educational institutions.
This year, up to 100 students took part in the excursion abroad. HTWK Leipzig was on the programme this time.
Prof. Anke Bucher, organiser of the event at HTWK Leipzig, welcomed the Dutch guests at 3.30 pm in the lecture hall of the Nieper Building. Silke Mühl from the International Office and Xu Xiao from the Department of Student Affairs gave the students from Avans Hogeschool an insight into HTWK Leipzig and the application procedures for semesters abroad. In addition, three student research projects at HTWK Leipzig introduced themselves to the guests:
- Paula Richter and Willi Zschiebsch from the Leobots team at the Faculty of Engineering provided information about the extensive activities and cross-faculty collaboration between the various players from the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Packaging Technology.
- Felix Kaule and Klaus Schneller from the Bikelab of the Faculty of Engineering made a great contribution to entertaining the students with their interactive presentation and introduced them to the main areas of research on the subject of bicycles.
- Equally interesting and entertaining was the presentation by Kalle Schramm and his team, who represented the Concrete Canoe Team of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and reported on the construction of the canoe as well as on competitions with the canoe.
Following these presentations, there was a short quiz for everyone, which Mrs Bucher had prepared. Afterwards, three representatives of the student council of the Faculty of Engineering took the Dutch students on a tour of the campus, where they were able to visit the civil engineers' experimental hall, among other things. Dr Klink from the Faculty of Civil Engineering explained the use of various test facilities using a number of examples.

From 6 p.m., everyone finally met again in the foyer of the Nieper Building, where the student council of the Faculty of Engineering had already set up a large table and catered for the physical well-being of the guests with bratwurst and mulled wine. The Leobot team had a stand with hands-on exhibits, which attracted a lot of interest from the students.
The Head of the International Office, Silke Mühl, and Prof Anke Bucher (Chair of Applied Mechanics) spoke with the accompanying supervisors and explored the possibilities of cooperation between the Avans Hogeschool and HTWK Leipzig for the future.
We would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment.
