Students were able to take part in the international summer school in Brno, the Czech Republic, through the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme.
As a partner university, HTWK Leipzig took part in a special summer school this summer: together with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communications Technology (FEKT) at Brno University of Technology and the Vienna University of Applied Sciences (FH Technikum Wien), the international summer school on microcontroller programming took place from 17 August 2026 to 28 August 2026.
Ten students from the Faculty of Engineering at HTWK Leipzig were able to take part in the Summer School thanks to the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme, spending two weeks engaging intensively with the programming of STM32 microcontrollers. The topics covered ranged from the basics – such as controlling GPIOs and serial communication via UART – to more advanced subjects such as timer programming and the use of DMA (Direct Memory Access) and ADC (Analogue-to-Digital Converter). This enabled the participants to develop, step by step, a sound understanding of the structure and programming of embedded systems.
The course concluded with small-scale development projects, which were carried out in mixed international teams of two. At the end of the summer school, the participants jointly presented their results – a fine example of just how much can be achieved in just two weeks when theory and practical work are closely intertwined.
Alongside the intensive work, there was also time to get to know the city of Brno better, with its sights and cosy cafés. Equally rewarding was the glimpse behind the scenes at the host university. In the field of electrical engineering alone, Brno University of Technology trains around 3,600 students. The participants had the opportunity to visit a student working group (Mission KOSTKA), which has not only independently developed and built a satellite, but also recently launched it into space on a SpaceX rocket. The visit to the Drone Research Centre working group was another highlight of the summer school.
For anyone wishing to get to know the university and the city in greater depth, an Erasmus placement lasting one or two semesters is highly recommended.
